What Is Block Storage?

[grve_title title=”Block warehouse” heading_tag=”h2″ heading=”h2″]

Speaking as simply as possible, block storage is such a system of storing goods in which we do not have direct access to each of the elements, because the goods “on top” block those that are further. To get to those that were stored first, one must remove from the way all those that found themselves there later. In turn, we will have the best access to those that we place in the row last (LIFO principle – Last In, First Out).

Cargo arranged in this way is stacked in piles on the warehouse floor or stored in racks dedicated for this purpose. Such a system allows for maximum use of the potential of warehouse space.

What if the warehouse does not have dedicated racks? Block storage on the floor is possible, although one must approach the height of the pile reasonably. Stacking has its limits, if only due to what load capacity individual packages have. The Regulation of the Minister of Labor and Social Policy of 1997 on general Health and Safety regulations defines the stacking limit by means of “pile efficiency”. This is not a very sharp term, but it gives some idea. For purely practical reasons, it is better to arrange a smaller pile than to wonder if it is a good idea. Block storage on the floor is obviously cheaper, however, the one with the participation of rack systems can be much more effective.

Warehouse processes play a key role in the activity of an online store.

Block storage with the help of racks is a much more developed form of this system. If only because it is based on various technical solutions. We distinguish among others:

  • Drive-in racks – an effective solution that allows driving a forklift with goods deep into the rack system and easy access to the pallet.
  • Flow racks – transport rollers are mounted in rack tunnels, which allow efficient management according to the FIFO principle.
  • Satellite racks – a remotely controlled self-propelled platform is responsible for transporting pallets. Materials are stored on support rails on which the platform moves.
